The north island is the main island of New Zealand (Aotearoa), Seperated from the larger but much less populous South island by Cook strait. From north to south, they are Whangerei, Auckland, Hamilition, naiper, Gisborne, Rotoura, Tauranga, Hastings, Whanganui, Palmerston North, and Wellington.
About 77% of New Zealands (Aotearoa) population lives in north island. The south island is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand (Aotearoa) in suface area. The other being the smaller but more populous north island. The north island population over took the south of the early 20th century.
